Alzheimer's grows in time. defined by brain shifts that deposit proteins. Alzheimer's disease shrinks and kills brain cells. Alzheimer's disease causes most dementia, a decline in intellect, conduct, and social skills. Changes alter a person's function.

Symptom

Alzheimer's is characterized by memory loss. Trouble recalling recent conversations or experiences are early indicators. Memory declines and other symptoms appear as the disease advances.

– Repeat statements and questions over and over. – Forget conversations, appointments or events. – Misplace items, often putting them in places that don't make sense.

Causes

Unknown causes of Alzheimer's disease. At their core, brain proteins malfunction. This interrupts neuron activity and causes a chain of events. Neurons break down and lose connections. Finally, they die.

Risk factor

The biggest risk factor for Alzheimer's is aging. Alzheimer's isn't normal aging. Older people are more likely to acquire it.

Complication

– Tell someone about being in pain. – Explain symptoms of another illness. – Follow a treatment plan. – Explain medicine side effects.

Prevention

– Exercise regularly. – Eat a diet of fresh produce, healthy oils and foods low in saturated fat, such as a Mediterranean diet. – Follow treatment guidelines to manage high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

When to see a doctor 

Memory loss and dementia can come from several diseases. Sometimes certain disorders can be addressed. Discuss your memory or thinking skills with your doctor.
